SQL 2014 Standard: Unable to Install

The customer reported this issue to me and it is not clearly reported or this resolution is not mentioned in any blog. So, I am sharing this experience.

Issue:

Unable to install SQL 2014 Standard.

Setup is stopping at the shortcut creation.

The following error has occurred:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC,version=”8.0.50727.6229″,publicKeyToken=”1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”x86″,type=”win32″‘. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x800736B5.

Resolution:

Reviewed sqlsetup.log

Reviewed the log here. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20170511_145049\SqlSupport_Cpu64_1_1.log

Reviewed event viewer logs.

We uninstalled 2 versions of Visual C++ 2005 x86 but no luck.

Installed .net 3.5.1 sp1, but no luck.

Copied the files to the disk then ran the setup but no luck.

We uninstalled all the failed components, restarted the server and tried to run the setup. Still no luck.

We found the issue with the SQL build provided by Microsoft. We took later build without updates and applied updates later and it worked.
