Exchange – Exchange 2016 CU8 shared Mailbox Access

One of the known issue after installing cumulative update 8 that the users will not able to access the shared mailbox directly from OWA using for example the link “https://mail.test.com/owa/sharedmailbox@test.com” using the mail enabled user which doesn’t have mailbox.

The error that should appear for user when tried to access it using OWA as following:

Error=Microsoft.Exchange.Clients.Owa2.Server.Core.OwaUserHasNoMailboxAndNoLicenseAssignedException

Something went wrong. We couldn’t find a mailbox for this recipient. Either they don’t have a mailbox or don’t have a license assigned

Log Name: Application

Source: MSExchange OWA

Event ID: 146

Task Category: Configuration

Level: Error

Keywords: Classic

User: N/A

Computer: E16 MBX Server

Description:

Outlook Web App failed to create ExchangePrincipal for SID. IsMonitoringRequest: False. Error: Microsoft.Exchange.Clients.Owa2.Server.Core.OwaUserHasNoMailboxAndNoLicenseAssignedException: The user does not have an Exchange mailbox.

at Microsoft.Exchange.Clients.Owa2.Server.Core.OwaClientSecurityContextIdentity.InternalCreateExchangePrincipal(HttpContextBase context)

As per Microsoft this issue should be considered as bug on the CU8 and they are working to fix it on the next CU’s but for a workaround user can access the shared mailbox using OWA light mode or Outlook for Windows client.
