Exchange 2016 – Unwanted Forwarding after migration

Somehow when you migrate the user mailbox from legacy exchange server to exchange server 2016 and you configured before migration a forwarding to another user may be that will not appear on exchange 2016 however it is working successfully.

So the issue if you need to remove the forwarding rule you will not able to that normally from the Exchange admin center as following:

  • In the Exchange Admin Center, navigate to Recipients > Mailboxes.
  • In the list of user mailboxes, click or tap the mailbox that you want to set up mail forwarding for, and then click or tap Edit.
  • On the mailbox properties page, click Mailbox Features.
  • Under Mail Flow, select View details to view or change the setting for forwarding email messages.
  • Uncheck the Enable forwarding check box

Then you will have to do this from power shell using command “Set-mailbox as following:

  • “Set-Mailbox -Identity “username” -DeliverToMailboxAndForward $false -ForwardingSMTPAddress $null”

Then you can check the forwarding rule which should be disabled.
