AD RMS: Unable to Copy the Template using Automated Task

Recently I worked on this issue that is nowhere documented in Public so I am sharing it to help others.

There are 2 tasks come in the task Scheduler for updating or coping the AD RMS templates to the local computer for the offline work.

My environment is Windows 7 and Office 2010.

 

 

When we run “AD RMS Rights Policy Template Management (Manual)”, it works fine and copy the templates from ADRMS servers

 

Now we have to enable the “AD RMS Rights Policy Template Management (Automated)” task which we can enable using the below cmd

schtasks /Change /TN “MicrosoftWindowsActive Directory Rights Management Services ClientAD RMS Rights Policy Template Management (Automated)” /ENABLE

 

Once this task is enabled and we logged in, it should have worked and copied the template. Now for the testing if you try to run it manually, it will return no error in any of the log and will not copy the template.

The reason is 30 days default wait time of this Task. This means this schedule task will run 1st time then wait for 30 days for the next run. In spite of having triggers to run it at every logon and 3:00 AM.

What is does is checks the value of lastUpdatedTime at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSDRMTemplateManagement registry path.

 

If you want this automated task to run again then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSDRMTemplateManagement registry path and delete the value of lastUpdatedTime or Key itself.

 

Microsoft has confirmed that this is not a bug or issue, in fact this is by design.

At the time of publishing this info, it is not available on any other website.

    This is a very useful post. I had this problem at my site today. I shall try the solution tomorrow and believe that this issue will be resolved. I wonder why Microsoft will say that this is not a bug.

    It is not a bug and it is by design. You don’t need to download the templates every day or every login.
