Exchange Server: .Net Framework 4.7 Do Not Install Right Now

Microsoft has recently released.Net Framework 4.7 which is getting installed with your window update.

Microsoft Exchange team has announced here that we should not install .net framework 4.7 on any Exchange Server.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/exchange/2017/06/13/net-framework-4-7-and-exchange-server/

Exchange team has not finished testing and asked us to hold the deployment until further notice.

Watch out for Update for Microsoft Windows KB3186539 and 3186568. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3186539/the-microsoft-net-framework-4-7-for-windows-8-1-windows-rt-8-1-and-win

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3186568/the-microsoft-net-framework-4-7-for-windows-10-version-1607-and-window

Now I am sure you are singing Britney Spears song “Microsoft did it again” but it is clear that .net and exchange team works separately.

In a broader picture .net 4.7 might be helpful for some other applications and their Product group decided to release it with Windows update.

So, what should we do now?

Either block the update or complete the installation then uninstall and block the update. Microsoft is not supporting it right now.

Here are the steps to block it from the registry from the KB mentioned here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4024204/how-to-temporarily-block-installation-of-the-net-framework-4-7

  • Back up the registry.
  • Start Registry Editor. To do this, click Start, type Regedit in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
  • Locate and click the following subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP
  • After you select this subkey, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
  • Type WU, and then press Enter.
  • Right-click WU, point to New and then click DWORD Value.
  • Type BlockNetFramework47, and then press Enter.
  • Right-click BlockNetFramework47, and then click Modify.
  • In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  • On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.

I think we did the same earlier here. https://msexchangeguru.com/2016/09/05/exchange-and-net-4-6-1/

Overall the best part is we have not heard about any issue yet.
