Exchange 2010 EMC does not open and event 1000 is logged in the application log
The resolution for this issue was pretty easy but took me a while to isolate.
EMC crashes the moment you open it with the following error:
The Following error occurred when getting user information For ‘MSExchangeGuru\Admin’: Processing data For a remote command Failed with the Following error message: The Windows Remote Shell cannot process the request; the selector value E456dh4s-7D4A-5A3D-A2D3-B2D4A2D4C2A2D4D3D2D446 specified in the request was not Found. For more Information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.
Additionally, the following error event got logged in the application log:
Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000
Level: Error
Computer: EXCH
Description:
Faulting application xxxx.exe, version 7.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03432, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e041d1, exception code 0xe053534f, fault offset 0x00000000000176fd, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10.
Resolution:
This happened because someone started an ExTra trace which was running and creating *.etl output. If you would have played with ExMon in the past or have ran calendar tracing with Microsoft PSS, you would be familiar with *.etl outputs.
All I did was to search for a file called “EnableTraces.Config” and found it in the root of the C Drive.
Safely “Delete it” and open EMC. It will open up just fine.
