iOS 5 Beta issues with Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy
Apple released their iOS5 OS for developers which is in its Beta version. This release has a known compatibility issue with Exchange ActiveSync if you have enabled “Require storage card encryption” in your Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy. This setting specifies whether the storage card must be encrypted. Not all mobile phone operating systems support storage card encryption. For now, iPhone and iPad running iOS5 do not support this feature.
A list of EAS policies can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123484.aspx
When a user who updated his Apple mobile device to iOS5 Beta tries to sync his email using Exchange ActiveSync, it gives a message “A policy requires you to encrypt the storage card on this device” – (Can’t recall, something similar..)
To resolve this issue:
- Do not update the phone to iOS5. Note that once you update, you cannot roll back the change.
- Configure a new EAS policy which would not require “Require storage card encryption” and add the user to it
- Simply uncheck “Require storage card encryption” from the EAS policy. Consult you InfoSec team before applying this change.

Is this a bug in the current beta? Or a new feature in iOS5 which now understands the EAS policy setting and will require ActiveSync policy update to resolve? (IT support nightmare here we come…).
I am happy to wait for a fixed beta (or the final release), but if it will need ITS involvement to update EAS policy…..

Could you please tell me if iOS5 will support the ActiveSync policies: “Include past e-mail items:” e-mail retention period and “Allow attachments to be downloaded to the device” policies in Exchange?
Under iOS4 they are not supported per testing and also per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232129.aspx, and inferred in http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Exchange_ActiveSync_and_iOS4_Devices/Introduction/Introduction.html.
Thank you!

@Chris – Im unsure about this feature. If your company has a contract with Apple, you could show a business cause and have them support it. Exchange Activesync is a matured feature and Im sure this would be possible.
@sysadmin – Try adding the user to EAS policy exception list. That’s all we can do as of now.
@Mark – It is a good practice to have a support doc in place for Mobile devices which is approved by your IT manager to tackle these kind of situations. No BETA versions should be supported by any internal IT team of a company only because “We dont make it”… So, if a user upgdate the device, “That’s his problem”… Well if that user happens to be the VP of your company, that will eventually become your problem.. So in this case the only fix is to create a new policy and exclude the affected user…

Unfortunately we have no contract with Apple as we run mostly Microsoft OS. It is just a number of people here syncing their approved personal iPhones with Exchange, and us trying to put a policy on Exchange to limit our risk. I was hoping someone with iOS5 beta could tell us if those two policies are now supported.

This appears to have been fixed by beta 2. I just upgraded and my Exchange account is now working.

Thanks for the update guys… Yes, Apple heard this and rectified the issue…

Hi There, according to what you guys are saying the Beta 2 should have fixed the Exchange issue with not being able to verify exchange settings, however mine doesn’t’ seem to be fixed. Any thoughts?

Hi Anthony, definitely Beta 2 has resolved the case for me. I had to be moved to a separate user group with encryption de-selected in Beta 1. Once upgraded to Beta 2, I moved back to the default user group (with both Exchange encryption policy enforced) and all was fine.

interesting. A policy implemented within iOS but shouldn’t have.

We have just moved to CloudWire Hosted Exchange 2010and they do support ActiveSync policies. I have not noticed an issue so far but I will be testing all the policies available to me and get back to you in a few days.

Any idea why the problem returned on the final release of iOS 5. My iPad 2 is a brick with out my email on Microsoft exchange.
I have an iPad 1 4.3.5 and I can set it up just fine so I know it’s not IT. It’s the new iOS 5 and apple tech won’t help.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
J.
