Delivery status notification & Distribution Groups
Exchange server do not sends NDRs, read receipts, delivery receipts, or out-of-office messages to members of the distribution groups.
NDRs, read receipts, delivery receipts or OOf messages are sent to the sender of the message or to the owner of the distribution group. The NDRs are sent only to the owner of the distribution group. To configure Exchange server to send additional reports to the owner of the distribution group, add the following registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesMSExchangeTransportParametersDLUnsuppressedMessageTypes
Set the registry value to 79
When a DL is expanded, the type of message is checked to find out whether it’s a delivery report message. If the message checked appeared to be a delivery report, the settings of the distribution group called “redirection setting “is checked to determine the redirection of the delivery report that is required.
Let’s see about the list of delivery report redirection settings that are available for DL & dynamic distribution groups:
ReportToManagerEnabled:
It enables delivery reports to be sent to the distribution group manager. The values we can use with this parameter are $true or $false. The manager is controlled by the Managed By parameter & it is controlled by these switches, set-Group for the distribution group & Set-DynamicDistributionGroup for Dynamic distribution groups.
ReportToOriginatorEnabled :
It enables the delivery reports to be sent to the sender of the email messages that are sent to the distribution group. The values we can use for this parameter are $true & $false, however the default value is set to $true.
Important point to note: The values of the above mentioned parameters (ReportToManagerEnabled & ReportToOriginatorEnabled) cannot be set to $true at the same time. If one is set to $true the must be set to $false else all the delivery status messages will be supressed.
Let’s now look at two scenarios, as in what type of settings will cause the delivery report message to be deleted & what settings will send the delivery report to the distribution group:
The settings that will cause the delivery report to be deleted when sent to a distribution group:
=> When the Report redirection is not set. Also when the report redirection is set to the message sender.
=> When the Report redirection is set to the distribution group manager & if the delivery report intend to send is not an NDR.
The following are the request settings when a messages is not a delivery report & it is sent to the distribution group:
=> The request report settings are not modified if the redirection is set to the message sender.
=> The report request settings are suppressed, if the report redirection is not set at all. “NOTIFY=NEVER” entry is added to “RCPT TO” for each recipient in the message.
=> All the report request settings are suppressed except NDR message sent to the distribution group manager, if the report redirection is set the distribution group manager.
